This project looks at how much U.S. military surplus equipment has been transferred to law enforcement agencies. It uses data from from the “1033 program” handled through the Law Enforcement Support Office, which posts data quarterly.
Summary
Since January 1, 2010, Texas law enforcement agencies have received thousands of military surplus items worth $125 million.
The 1033 program, allows agencies to get military equipment like weapons, vehicles, and gear at no or reduced cost. The items range from weapons and vehicles to body armor, reinforcing the need for public safety without incurring substantial costs.
